Be Careful With Gift Giving
Gift giving is often hierarchical
in Chinese culture. The superior gives a gift to the inferior to show appreciation and philanthropy, and the inferior gives
a gift to show deference and respect, according to Confucianism.
Another longterm resident of China,
from America originally, explained this to me.
Therefore, discomfort with gifts can
be explained. Many Chinese are interested in the Christmas cornucopia of gift giving - as they are fond of their children
and want to annex one more holiday that gives them the chance to have fun with them.
