China: Good Manners: Sample All Food

Sample Food From Every Dish

I did not understand this custom at first, with disastrous results.  I was working on a CCTV film set my first month in China, and had no end of wonderful dishes served to me and to me alone; the table could have broken with the weight of them.

I had only to murmur delight at one food such as pumpkin to have a large plate of it prepared for me at the following meal.

I did not know that to ber polite I should have at least taken one tiny bite from every plate of food that was to be served to me.

If this does not seem logical, well, then our culture could be seen as less than logical as we stuff ourselves with junk food and spend billions on weight loss formulas.
