A Notorious China Blogger Offends So Many With Race & Gender Bias

I have just been reading a hideously offensive blog on China and its women - voted by a Netizen audience as one of Top Ten Most Offensive Blogs - that hits all the "racist/sexist buttons that anyone could push.

The culprit calls himself Chinabounder.

The government of China is well aware of these blatantly tasteless writings, and Chinese bloggers themselves vow to determine his location and question him in person. Still, with all their surveillance, one would think it a simple matter to determine an IP.

I suspect he hankers to be new Henry Miller, though Henry Miller was brave at the time he wrote, a well rounded thinker, who wrote on a wide variety of subjects.

This blogger dishes up more of the same, though he turns up the volume on the usual hackneyed thoughts on China - and records his ownn love afairs with his students.

This is a big No No in Canada, where I write from, though we excuse excess in the Western democracies if it comes out a great artist, that is not the concern here.

The angry letters at the bottom of his pages make for rich reading, as rich as the journals themselves.

The most common attitude of non-Chinese is:

Can't you find anything good to say about this country?

or: Why are you here then?

The most often expressed thought of Chinese women already resident in the West:

You couldn't get a girlfriend here.

Let's go over his stale ramblings, as they again leave White Women, completely out of the China picture:

He writes mostly about his love affairs with young Chinese women in a completely non-credible way to someone, myself, who knew hundreds of young men and women in their late teens and early twenties, in three different provinces of China.

Sorry, I don't buy Instant Sex in the New China, with no strings attached, as that is not the way things are done there. More likely, his Shanghai girls were girls-for-hire, or what my friend Jack calls, the Money Girls.

The man in question is in his early forties, and quite a butterfly among the flowers, his "dates" half his age, met in public bars, clubs, and restaurants, as well as through teaching. (And don't assume I pass moral judgment here, because I don't: I describe life factually).

Though he fancies himself an iconoclastic rebel, his Christian morality all gone haywire comes out in his pious criticisms of Chinese men, and Chinese society in general when this writer who describes himself as a wastrel, skims through the Chinese news media for a gruesome story of a Chinese male teacher murdering a young female student, and compares his mistreatment by Chinese bloggers and media as unjust:

"Her name was Zhang Yaoyi. She was 11. She was a pupil in a school in ... central Hunan province.

I imagine her. I see her...

And then the lunacy that lurks beneath the male skin slithers to the surface."

Well, we could dwell upon schools in Western countries where one lone male lunatic opens fire and kills a lot more people than one student, if we want to get childishly competitive.

Though this child's death is a sad story, it is a credit to the Chinese media that one death was covered in their national media, with over one billion people to write news about.

Chinabounder then goes on to moan and groan about his treatment in the media.

His comments about other white people working in China are choice tidbits of misanthropy - He rants about ex-pats as well.

Surrounded by Chinese men, who are footing the bills for their daughters' and wives' English lessons, allowing China bounder a leisurely life, he writes:

"...as Chinese woman too often goes from chaste virgin to being badly, coolly and rapidly f----- by her cold fish husband; as she unwraps the gift ...and finds a cold, cooked, congealed potato therein."

Millions of Chinese men and boys, are now referred to as:
cold, cooked, congealed potato.

Do you live in a Western democracy?

Is this fair? To the young people you teach?

I read the next passage to my Chinese boyfriend:

Chinabounder, I suspect, obsesses with a publishing contract, and to that end, his love affairs use unpaid labour; his own trite China-bashing journalism, with no empathy, compassion, or respectfulness, has been heard many times before though its extremity is what shocks.

Of other writers in China:

"Now of course this problem has been written by the Shanghai Talk staff; its got the same stale style as the rest of the magazine, that same clichéd and banal journalese."

But his own really "fresh" thoughts, are on the white women:

"White woman in Shanghai is invisible.

And white woman...looking for a husband! Should guys like me even notice such a woman, our reaction would be one of scorn, pity or amusement. Most likely the latter, as later we guffawed with our friends over the very idea of a relationship with a white woman."

Do you want a "husband" who goes out with Money Girls?

Do you want a man who pretends to be a "male feminist" (reading through his diaries, laughably, he insults white guys as well as Chinese, for not having his "sensitivity" with Chinese women!)

Do you women who like to travel around the world want a guy who insults every single facet of life in the exotic foreign country that gives him an interesting, well paying job and attractive young lovers?

He does make one major contribution to "fresh" thought:
he tears through the dusty antique stereotype of Chinese women as fragile flowers, and now depicts as more contemporary, wild, and uninhibited than American or British girls - I don't believe it. Does not a young pretty Chinese girl want a young attractive Chinese boy? Some natural rapport.

Note: to those trying to find out this blogger is, I have noticed, as an English teacher, a strange repeating speech pattern of his:

He never adds a or the before he writes the word woman, even hen it is required, this could be daring writing though I doubt that from the rest of his potato like style.

Dig this from the white guy acts superior to Chinese men:

"Its not just the fact Chinese woman is slender, slinky and easy, though all that is powerful. Its not the fact that as Chinese woman grows older she still looks good (though nonetheless we will, if not too tightly married, still change her for a younger model), whereas white womans hips spread, t--- sag, and skin sinks: it is not just that."

(I am not being coy when I x out words, I want kids to pass through my sites!)

Over and over he forgets the adjectives in front of the word woman: could he be another race than British? He then is clearly an English teacher as the rest of the language is perfect grammar.

"White woman in Shanghai is invisible.

And white woman who is looking for a husband!"

His hourly wage as a teacher in China in exact comparison with the people who live there"

200 rmb an hour for tutoring, or about forty dollars Canadian from a few short years ago.

In ten hours, our Chinabounder earns as much as a GP trained at university does in an entire month. My friend Sonya who graduated as a GP made $400 Canadian a month; subsidized homes may be included.

Factory, store and restaurant workers made $100 - $150 monthly, with room and board included.

The hurt and the pain millions of Chinese suffered when they read these diaries is cavalierly dismissed by him as of little importance, as he scoured the local media for the child death story to morally justify his own callousness.

Though good writing requires some spice, there is a world of difference between the bland porridge of officially approved medias, and having a shaker of red cayenne pepper thrown into your eyes.

To be concise, his work lacks both mind and heart.
